Meet the Judges: Amy Twigg
Meet the judges! We chatted with the lovely Amy Twigg on all things books. A writer, born and raised in Kent, her debut novel Spoilt Creatures won the BPA Pitch Prize and was longlisted for the Mslexia Novel Competition. In 2024 she was chosen as one of the Observer's Best New Novelists.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE ONLINE READING COMMUNITY?
The enthusiasm and timekeeping. How do book bloggers manage to read so many books? It's very impressive.
WHAT BOOK FIRST SPARKED YOUR LOVE FOR READING?
Growing up, I was obsessed with Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman. Later on in secondary school, I remember borrowing a teacher's copy of Enduring Love by Ian McEwan and having my mind blown open.
WHAT DEBUT AUTHOR SHOULD WE BE KEEPING OUR EYES ON?
There are some brilliant debuts coming out in 2025. I've recently loved The Lamb by Lucy Rose and am halfway through reading This Immaculate Body by Emma van Straaten, which so far is excellent.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL INSPIRED TO WRITE?
Films, music, women.
IF YOU COULD GO FOR DINNER WITH A CHARACTER, WHO WOULD YOU PICK AND WHY?
Clarice Starling. We'd talk all night about gender inequality, fitness regimes and cannibalism.
DO YOU HAVE ANY READING RITUALS?
Always read in the bath, never dog-ear a page.
